Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Character Builds

Seemingly out of nowhere, Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance was suddenly re-released by Interplay and Black Isle Studios for modern consoles. Even since, I've been playing all three characters.  Here are the builds I've found online,  that I believe work best:

Adrianna, the Sorceress

Her more powerful (and expensive) spells can really deal damage fast. Once her spell points have been depleted, she can easily run into battle and play at being a fighter!

Stats
  • When leveling, Adrianna should put her fourth level ability point into Constitution (the extra hit points really help) and the rest into Intelligence. Strength can be modified by Amulets and Rings, while Wisdom, Charisma and Dexterity are not as useful for her..
Primary Weapon
  • Adrianna can equip all armor and all but the heaviest weapons. That means she is limited to using all one-handed weapons, as well as all staves. She can also use all types of bows. I recommend sticking to using one-handed weapons with a shield. The best weapon in the game is a one-handed weapon, so getting used to fighting in this way is a bonus.
Rings and Amulets
  • All rings and amulets should focus on Strength
Special Abilities

  • Meditation is only necessary for those points in the game that you can't easily get to a town to buy Potions of Rejuvenation.

Focus on any special ability spell; but preference seems to be ball lighting.

Ball Lightning

    • At a cost of 15 energy points to cast, this spell is awesome! A single ball of lightning is spent spinning across the screen until it hits something at which point it dissipates. While flying it shocks everything close to it, dealing an incredible amount of damage per second! It deals 36 damage per second level in Ball Lightning. Only one ball can be shot at once. This spell is really useful for cleaning out rooms and halls of enemies before even setting foot in them! That's why it is on my best spell list! A must for the Onyx Tower!
    • The spell costs 16 spell points for the first level, 17 for the second, then 19, followed by 21, and finally 25 to master.

Vahn, the Arcane Archer (Shock Arrow Special Damage Build)

This build focuses primarily on the shock arrow special ability.  I've decided to use this build.

Stats
  • 1st level should go towards Strength; then every four levels Vahn should stick points into Dexterity. He needs his points there the most. He should use two Strength items and one Dexterity items at all times.  However, build below suggests a modifying to constitution later in level.  I'll determine if constitution is better suited vs dexterity at that time.
Primary Weapon
  • He is also extremely proficient with the bow, so using one would probably be best for him. Also, he should carry as many arrows as he can, buying a store of 200 every time he returns to town.
Rings and Amulets
  • A combination of strength and dexterity.  Strength is needed to wear better armor, where as dexterity helps with hitting.  He should use two Strength items and one Dexterity items at all times.
Special Abilities

This is my cookie-cutter build for starting fresh on Hard mode. This requires a lot of point saving early on, so it can be a bit harder in the beginning, but starts to come into power right around when you start Act 2.

Levels 1-5: Save ALL skill points, then get Shock Arrows 1 at Level 5. Stat point into Strength, bringing it to 18 for a +4 bonus.
Levels 6-7: Save all points again, get Shock Arrows 2 at Level 7.
Level 8: Rank 1 in Combat Reflexes, Improved Critical, Death Blow, Intestinal Fortitude, Meditation, Enchant Arrows. Stat point to Dexterity, bringing it to 16 for a +3 bonus.
Level 9: Rank 2 in Improved Critical and Death Blow. Save remaining 4 points.
Level 10: Rank 3 Shock Arrows.
Level 11: Arcane Quiver, Rank 2 Combat Reflexes, save 1 skill point.
Level 12: Rank 3 Combat Reflexes, Improved Critical, Death Blow. Point to Constitution.
Level 13: Rank 4 Improved Critical and Death Blow. Save 4 skill points.
Level 14: Rank 4 Shock Arrows. Save 2 skill points.
Level 15: Rank 4 Combat Reflexes. Save 8 skill points.
Level 16: Rank 5 Shock Arrows. Point to Constitution. Save 4 skill points.
Level 17: Rank 5 Combat Reflexes, Improved Critical, and Death Blow. No points remaining.

You'll finish the first playthrough around Level 17, assuming you clean out each area, and this will set you up well for Extreme mode. You'll have to struggle in the cellar until you get your first bow, then things will start to roll. From here on you're mostly just going to fill out utility skills like Meditation/Intestinal Fortitude, Deflect Arrows, a second elemental arrow as a fallback, and maybe Enchant Arrows as well. How you build at that point is up to you, but all points should go into Constitution at that point.

Vahn, the Arcane Archer (Alterative Base Damage Build)

This build focuses primarily on raising Vahn's base bow damage first; before investing in special abilities which costs energy.

Stats
  • Every four levels Vahn should stick points into Dexterity. He needs his points there the most. He should use two Strength items and one Dexterity items at all times.
  • Vahn should concentrate on raising his regular damage before all else. Points in Death Blow, Improved Critical, Combat Reflexes and Enchant Arrows are necessary. They should each be brought to rank three after you have bought Arcane Quiver. The next area to concentrate on is Shock Arrows and Hail of Arrows. Bring them to rank two and then get three ranks of Meditate and Willpower. More points should be spent on all the previous skills as points become available. The other arrow attacks are not that necessary to complete the game. Shock arrows are very important in Extreme Mode.

Base Damage Focused Abilities (First)

Arcane Quiver x 1

  • Reduces the weight of arrows. Absolutely needed if going for an archery build. Still good even if wanting to use melee weapons.

Hail of Arrows x 3

  • This is another of Vahn's really interesting abilities. When using this ability, the arrow that Vahn fires is split into a number of arrows equal to his rank plus one for a cost of [1 + (rank*3)] energy points. These arrows all deal the regular damage that his bow deals. First level costs five skill points to buy, second level costs seven, third costs ten, fourth costs fourteen, and fifth costs twenty.
  • I recommend this skill over the others at high levels. If Vahn has a high damage bow, then this is the skill for him.

Death Blow x 3

  • Raises critical damage. Best paired with Improved Critical. After all, that extra damage won’t come if you don’t land a critical in the first place.

Improved Critical x 3

  • This feat enhances the critical hit range. Each rank adds 5% to the chance of getting a critical hit with each strike. Each rank costs its own level in skill points to buy.

Since this skill affects both his melee and missile attacks, a few ranks of this skill will make things easier for you.

Combat Reflexes x 2

  • Increases attack speed: one of the best overall feats as it will increase the rate of all damage. Vahn has other areas to concentrate on, so only a rank or two of this skill should be bought, and only at later levels.

Enchanted Arrow X ?

  • Increases damage of normal bow attacks.

Special Energy Focused Abilities (Second)

Shock Arrows x 2

Vahn enchants an arrow with lightning and fires it in the direction he is facing. This bolt is more effective when it misses the target, as it will continue travelling and shocking any nearby opponents until it passes the end of the screen or hits something. First level costs ten skill points to buy, followed by eleven, thirteen, fifteen, and nineteen skill points. Each arrow deals 30-48 damage for ten energy points at first level, 35-59 for eleven at second level, followed by 40-73 for twelve, 45-89 for thirteen, and lastly 50-105 for fourteen energy points.

In my opinion, these are the best arrows along with Hail of Arrows. Between those two skills and Enchant arrows, you should be able to build an awesome arsenal.
