I’m intrigued by this new red Sonja tail by Stephen Isles, who wrote 30 days of night. Can’t wait to dive into this one.
After landing in jail following a night of drunken revelry, Red Sonja hears an outlandish story from a fellow inmate. Deep in the mountains lies a dead city in a valley with no name. Abandoned and forgotten, its fields and streets are littered with the bones of two armies, all destroyed by a curse from a warlock who has long since vanished, along with his vast treasure – untold riches just waiting to be taken. At least that is the legend. But Sonja’s cellmate Morgo has more than a diverting tale – he’s also got a map that says this legend could well be reality. All they need to do is break out of lockup and hit the road – which may be easier said than done!Crafted by legendary writer STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night, Simon Dark) and rising art star ALESSANDRO AMORUSO, Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #1 delivers monsters, magic, and mayhem in equal measure – all wrapped up in sumptuous covers from JOSHUA MIDDLETON, JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER, JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER, PHILIP TAN, and cosplay by RACHEL HOLLON!

A somewhat of a simple story to start this series. Sonja meets. Comrade who dies in the final panels. She takes his map and vows revenge. On to issue 2.
ReplyDeleteSonja rescues Luna who is being dragged behind a coffin by a giant. Fricken awesome panels. Sonja invites Luna on her quest. She has skinner the warrior from issue 1 and dried the map that was his tattoo. Haha. Steve Nikes is making this a bit dark. Off to issue 3 and the duo embark on their quest.
ReplyDeleteSonja and Luna find an old man being lead by two warrior to find his home so he can die. A battle ensues and Lucas, one of the two warriors, loses his companion in the fight. Sonja, Luna, Lucas and Grimore, the old man continue their journey. Sonja and Luna decide to keep their true purpose a secret. The final panels show Grimore pushing Luna off a large cliff. Luna can’t read Grimore’s mind. Who or what is this supposed old man?
ReplyDeleteSoundtrack: Stonefield either the 2017 or 2019 album? Both are great.
ReplyDeleteIssue for starts with Sonia and Lucas trying to find Luna. Grimes more lies and tells them that six marauders have killed her. Both lupus and Sonia don’t believe the old man, but it turns out the old man knows the entrance to the lab labyrinth that Sonia is trying to find the side to keep them alive and move forward on their quest. The trio come across five mask, riders and attack and kill them only to realize they were innocent. This is all because of the old man’s lies who suddenly disappears during the encounter. Lucas and Sonia now need to track the old man who is deceived them all along. The final panels so the duo have caught up to the old man who’s been waiting for them. A battle is about to ensue. Onto issue five.
ReplyDeleteWell, issue five is done and a lot happens in such little pages. We see Lucas gets slaughtered by the old man when suddenly Luna appears having not been killed in the earlier issues. She simply uses a spell to take away the old man’s magic and therefore rendering him, vulnerable. Sonya and the old man duel and of course Sonia wins the final panels quickly show Sonia and Luna celebrating their loot. This was a very simple story called rather quickly in such a little pages featured In each Dynamite issue. I enjoyed the story, I thought Luna was a pretty cool character. But in the end I think dynamite Comics just produces their stories and issues a little too quickly. The covers are gorgeous, the stories are pretty good, but also rather light in detail. A fun read Sonia story. Steve Niles did a pretty good job, but I might be staying away from the red Sonia dynamite Moving forward.
